Recession Prevention By Frenectomy Using Laser Procedure
Some people may experience receding gums due to poor oral hygiene or other factors but some may receive gum recession just because of the location of their muscle attachments which will be presented in this article.
Muscle attachments are often called frenal attachments. Several frenum are present in the mouth. The one that most often causes gum recession, occurring on the lip side of the lower front teeth is presented now in this article.
In the cases where the frenulum attaches to the gums and causes recession, a frenectomy is recommended to prevent further recession.
A 28 year female was referred to me by her orthodontist due to a recession in the lower incisor tooth. As you can see, as described above the pictures show the recession was caused by the frenulum attachment pulling the gum down, exposing the root.
The treatment of choice was removing the attachment between the frenulum and the tooth gum by laser. Laser frenectomy has many advantages like fast healing, scare free and reduced pain compared to other procedures such as using blades.
The pictures below show the before and after results.
In the after picture you can observe the frenum is reattached and no longer connected to the tooth. This will stabilise the gums prevent further recession.
Aesthetically, the patients gums have greatly improved and gained attached gingiva which is an important factor in maintaining the teeth.
