Overview
This case involved a 52-year-old woman referred for removal of a frictional fibroma that created both aesthetic and functional discomfort.
What Is an Irritation Fibroma?
Irritation fibroma (also called traumatic fibroma or focal fibrous hyperplasia) is one of the most common benign exophytic soft-tissue lesions in the oral cavity.
Typical features include:
- Well-defined nodular shape
- Firm texture
- Surface color similar to surrounding mucosa
- History of repetitive local trauma or irritation
Common triggers include chronic mechanical irritation, cheek/lip biting, and localized friction from dental factors.
Why Laser Was Chosen
For this case, diode laser excision was selected to support:
- Hemostasis during surgery
- Tissue precision
- Reduced collateral trauma
- Faster early healing
- Lower post-operative discomfort
The removed tissue was sent for histopathology to confirm diagnosis.
Clinical Outcome
- One-week review showed complete early healing
- Patient reported no significant post-operative pain
- Biopsy result: fibrous hyperplasia consistent with irritation fibroma

Key Clinical Point
Even when a lesion appears clinically benign, definitive tissue diagnosis is essential. Early removal plus elimination of the local irritative factor gives the best long-term outcome and very low recurrence risk.
